PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ETIENNE TERRE’BLANCHE,
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE MILK PRODUCERS’ ORGANISATION
Evaporated milk containing soya exposed
The Pick ‘n Pay retail group has been ordered to remove an imported evaporated milk blend containing soya marketed under the Pick ‘n Pay’s “No Name Brand” as “evaporated milk” from retail outlets countrywide. The National Department of Agriculture acted against Pick ‘n Pay following a compaint laid by the Milk Producer’s Organisation (MPO) against the retailer.
The product is being sold as “evaporated milk”, despite the fact that it contains soya. The label was evaluated in terms of the Agricultural Products Standards Act, No 119 of 1990. It was found that the product does not comply with the minimum requirements specified by the Act. Pick ‘n Pay was ordered to remove all faulty products from the shelves no later than 21 December 2007.
The MPO acted on a complaint received from a consumer and notified the relevant authorities immediately. “The swift action by the authorities will ensure that the negative impact the product may have had on the South African dairy industry, was limited,” said Etienne Terre’Blanche, managing director of the MPO.
