PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ETIENNE TERRE’BLANCHE,
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE MILK PRODUCERS’ ORGANISATION
Imported UHT milk quality questioned
Consumers must make sure that they get value for money when they buy imported long-life milk, said Etienne Terre’Blanche, managing director of the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO), following a recent investigation by the MPO into widely available imported long-life milk.
According to the labels on some imported UHT milk containers, the milk does not meet South African requirements. The butterfat and protein percentages are lower than our legal requirements. “Consumers must take a close look at the labels to ensure that they are getting value for their money,” Terre’Blanche said.
South African requirements are 3,3% butterfat and 3,1% protein for full-cream long-life milk. Long-life milk that is manufactured in South Africa, meets all the legal requirements.
“The MPO appeals to consumers to rather buy locally manufactured products, thus contributing towards the South African economy and maintaining job opportunities in the dairy industry. The dairy industry provides work to more than 60 000 people,” Terre’Blanche said.
