MPO press releases

5 September 2007

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ETIENNE TERRE’BLANCHE, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE MILK PRODUCERS’ ORGANISATION

Price of milk imports rises
The average price at which milk powder was imported between June and July 2007, increased by R9,00 per kilogram according to statistics released earlier this week,.

Etienne Terre’Blanche, managing director of the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO), describes these latest figures that indicate more expensive milk powder imports, as “pleasing”.

“It appears as if the price of imported milk powder is stabilising in accordance with international tendencies. The MPO recently approached the relevant authorities to investigate low-priced milk powder imports and this investigation, as well as that of Agri Inspec, is progressing well.”

The MPO indicated its concern regarding imports in August this year, after free-on-board prices of some milk powder consignments were on average $1 300 per ton below the conventional world price.

Despite the most recently released statistics, the MPO is still concerned about shipments of milk powder from certain countries that are imported below world prices. The organisation is in the process of formally appealing to the embassies of Ireland, New Zeeland, Agentina and the Ukraine on this issue.

“The MPO plans to send a delegation to the relevant embassies to officially address these imports.”

The MPO is currently exploring the desirability of implementing trade remedies. This includes taking action against dumping and the subsidisation of dairy products.
