MPO press releases

1 June 2007
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ETIENNE TERRE’BLANCHE, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE MILK PRODUCERS’ ORGANISATION

Eastern Cape dairy producers very positive
One out of three dairy producers in the Eastern Cape attended the Milk Producers’ Organisation’s (MPO) roadshow at the end of May. This record is a reflection of producers’ support for the MPO and a new optimism among dairy producers now that producer prices are finally increasing. Good weather conditions, the availability of sufficient supplies of roughage and excellent quality silage all contribute towards this optimism.

Freddie van Zyl, chairman of the Eastern Cape MPO, expressed the hope that the number of producers leaving the industry will now stabilise. Since the beginning of the year, the number of producers in the Eastern Cape has decreased from 415 to 385.

Etienne Terre’Blanche, managing director of the MPO, emphasised the need for producers to now make use of the opportunity to consolidate their position in the dairy industry by forming organised, legal groups. These groups can then negotiate, among others, for better milk and feed prices. “Group formation is one of the most effective ways to restore the balance in the dairy industry,” Terre’Blanche said.
